Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom at MIHM

Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom at MIHM

Moscow Region Philharmonic presents a recital of MRP’s State Choir marking the 175th anniversary of Pyotr Tchaikovsky. On 27 October 2015 at 7 pm the ensemble will perform the sacred work of the composer, Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom at MIHM (the Chamber Hall). Mr. NikolayAzarovwillbeconducting.

Tchaikovsky composed the Liturgy base primarily on his impressions of the style of church choral music. At the end of the 19th century the Liturgy became the first independent work encompassing not just some separate pieces but the entire cycle of Orthodox service, including litanies and short chants.

The composer said that creating the Liturgy was an attempt to bring back authenticity to Russian church music: “I will be proud to be the first of contemporary Russian musicians to have worked on restoring the authentic character and array of our church music.”

Back in 1880 the premiere of the Liturgy in Moscow was considered outrageous: for the first time in history it was presented as an open secular recital! Performing of this music had been banned from churches until the death of the composer, and controversies haven’t quite abated.

This time the Liturgy along with secular works of Russian composers and renderings of folk songs in the second section will be presented by MRP’s State Choir. In 2015 the choir participated in top international music festivals: Sion (Switzerland) and Schleswig Holstein (Germany). According to Literaturnaya Gazeta that’s one of the best choral ensembles in this country: “… What marvelous, lively young voices! What a superb intonation! And chiefly, what a vibrant energy in the sound, vivacity, freshness, sonority along with this invigorating depth of silence!...”
