Mikhail Ivanov and Russian “Sophia” belfry at the 1st International Festival “Prosvetitel”

From 26 to 28 July the 1st International St. Vladimir festival of orthodox vocals "Prosvetitel" ("Evangelizer") was held on Valaam. The festival marked 1000th anniversary of passing away of Equal-to-the-Apostles Saint Prince Vladimir.

The event was organized by the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Patriarchal monastery of Valaam and the Foundation for supporting Russian art and orthodox culture "The Society for the Revival of artistic Russia 1915".

The festival brought together participants from 23 countries of the world – Russia, Serbia, Montenegro, Italy, France, Germany, and others.

The list of performers included singer Divna Luboyevich and "Melody" choir (Serbia), choirs of monks from the Great Lavra on Mount Athos, from Kiev Ecclesiastical Academy, Georgian "Basiani" Patriarchy, Minsk monastery of St. Elizabeth, festive choirs of Valaam monastery and Moscow St. Daniel's monastery, as well as Moscow men's choir "Chant of Ancient Russia", men's choir of Vologda Philharmonic, and Byzantine choir "Moses Petrovich" (Belgrade).

The festival featured soloist of Moscow Region Philharmonic, Honored Artist of Russia Mikhail Ivanov. Composer, pianist, and music producer presented a musical instrument of his own invention – Russian belfry named "Sophia". The work by M. Ivanov "On the Seven Winds" was performed at the opening concert.

The event presented diverse music: chants from Greece, Serbia, Georgia, and other countries with long-living traditions, cantatas, spiritual verse and epic ballades about St. Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir. The vocal program was accompanied by gusli, hurdy-gurdy, ethnic wind instruments, and the chimes of "Sophia" by Mikhail Ivanov and Alexander Chayka.

"Soulful Chime" performed by Alexander Chayka (Russian "Sophia" belfry)
