Centre for Ethnic Music Development presents New Year’s Gala Concert

On 14 January 2016 leaders of MRP's Centre for Ethnic Music Development Honored Artists of Russia Andrey and Mikhail Ivanov presented Gala Concert Old New Year Revisited at Tchaikovsky Concert Hall.

According to Andrey Ivanov, the program was like a kind of "musical New Year tree" decorated with genres, styles, and instruments. This miscellany was reflected in the name of the program – Crossing the Time.

For the first time Ivanov brothers performed with the celebrated National Academic Orchestra of Folk Instruments led by People's Artist of Russia Vladimir Andropov. Jazz and folk, classical and contemporary music were mingled in new original compositions.

The event featured internationally acclaimed musicians:
Honored Artist of Tatarstan Republic Aidar Gainullin (bayan, accordina),
Boris Andrianov (cello),
Honored Artist of Russia, Honored Man of Arts Leonid Vintskevich (piano),
Nikolay Vintskevich (saxophone),
Alexander Zinger (percussions).

The program was opened by a spectacular performance of Aidar Gainullin, who presented original works accompanied by the orchestra: Phantasy Inspired by Tatar theme and Euphoria. Renowned percussionist Sergey Shamov played exotic instrument called kakhon. Specific rhythms, ethnic tunes and harmonies, and unusual playing techniques captured the audience's attention.

The concert also featured a humorous piece by Alexander Tsygankov, works by Mikhail Ivanov combining various folk tunes and jazz, and also compositions by Leonid Vintskevich, from reflective monologues of various instruments to virtuoso improvisation.

Lamentation by contemporary Italian composer, referred to by critics as "wild experimentalist" Giovanni Sollima, stood out in this musical story. The work for solo cello, where the musician plays and sings, was performed by Boris Andrianov.

The event was closed by a jam session featuring all the program's participants. Final improvisation by double bassist Andrey Ivanov was one of the high points of the concert.
