Moscow Region Philharmonic at “Preobrazheniye” festival

The 23rd Arts Festival "Preobrazheniye" took place in Yaroslavl from 19 to 23 August. The festival was organized by the Department for Culture of Yaroslavl region, State Philharmonic of Yaroslavl, and State History, Architecture and Arts Museum of Yaroslavl. The festival has always been hosted by the Museum of Yaroslavl which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.

The opening of the festival (19 August) commemorated the Baptizer of Russia, St. Prince Vladimir Equal-to-the-Apostles. To mark the 1000th anniversary of his passing away misterium by Andrey Mikita "Prince Vladimir" was performed. The piece had been premiered in July of this year on Valaam.

It is a combination of the gusli plunk, old Byzantian singing and bell chimes played by distinguished musician, soloist of Moscow Region Philharmonic, Honored Artist of Russia Mikhail Ivanov (Russian "Sophia" belfry). Mikhail presented a work of his own at the festival – "Tsar Chime", a festive bell hymn. The program also featured soloist of Moscow Region Philharmonic, Honored Artist of Russia Andrey Ivanov (contrabass).

On 21 August solo concert titled "Ring, Ring, Golden Rus" was given by State orchestra "Guslars of Russia". Works of S. Rakhmaninoff, T. Hrennikov, D. Tukhmanov, K. Shakhanov, D. Hristov, V. Gorodovskaya, B. Trotsyuk, G. Ponomarenko, L. Afanasyev and others were played. The audience and participants welcomed a joint performance of Rakhmaninoff and Glinka's works by the orchestra and the bell ringers.

The official website of the festival says the pieces "evoke in the listeners that hardly explainable state of mind which Pushkin called "The Russian spirit". Expansive, jovial, saga-like sounding of the gusli provides an accurate illustration to Russian folk tales".
