Symphojazz at Tchaikovsky Concert Hall: Ivanov brothers and MRP’s Choir

On 16 June Tchaikovsky Concert Hall hosted a recital titled "Classics and Jazz" as part of the series "Symphojazz of Ivanov brothers". The event featured leaders of MRP's Centre for Ethnic Music Development, Honored Artists of Russia brothers Mikhail and Andrey Ivanov, MRP's State Choir led by Nikolay Azarov, Academic Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Philharmonic led by Yuri Simonov (conducted by Igor Manasherov), Dmitri Illarionov (guitar), Alexander Buzlov (cello), and Alexander Singer (percussions).

The recital showcased the outcome of artsitic experiments in the search for new genre solutions throughout the concert season. The orchestra, the choir and the soloists presented three sympho-choral-jazz compositions: "Epic Ballade", "On the Seven Winds", and "Polovtsian Rhapsody". The performance of "On the Seven Winds" required texts for syllabic singing that were created for the choir on the analogy of jazz scat singing, yet in the Russian folk tradition (syllabic chant).

The program included other works by Mikhail and Andrey Ivanov ("Flower Dance", "Chimes", "My Dream", "Lullaby"), as well as music by Andrey Mikita, Leonard Bernstein, and Joaquin Rodrigo.
